Village Savings and Loan: A Power to Eradicate Poverty Among Women

Northern Uganda was under the oppression of the LRA for more than 25 years. Many lost resources to live and educational opportunities, especially girls.  In Uganda, the Acholi sub- region has the highest number of vulnerable women.

THRIVEGulu as an organization is responding to the plight of women by supporting them to work in VSLA (Village Savings and Loan Association). THRIVE Gulu now has 25 VSLA groups with 1,000 women and men working together to fight poverty. The groups are supported basic materials necessary for their savings like: passbook, calculator, ruler, stamp pad, bowl and also basic training in business skills, literacy, family planning, health and sanitation. The groups are further supported with seed money as grant to strengthen the groups capital base for members to borrow.

“THRIVE Gulu is our deliverance, we can now have voice among other women in the community because of the support they have given us. At least each of us can now afford to get 10,000 UGX shillings a day that we can use to pay our children’s school fees, pay rent and meet other basic family needs. With this support we are now keeping our money in the bank and our groups record is well managed. We never thought we could smile again but with the help from THRIVE Gulu our teeth and faces are shining day and night.”
