Counseling

More than Surviving

THRIVEGulu D+T dance

THRIVEGulu believes that meaningful existence is more than mere survival. We believe the invisible wounds of psychological trauma deserve healing. And, we believe that functionality and productivity can only flourish when an individual and her community are more-than-surviving.

Therapeutic support involves a wide range of activities that improve the well-being of survivors. This ranges from individual counseling and group therapy to Yoga and sports.

Since the founding of THRIVEGulu, we have sought to use storytelling as a way for individuals to start on the road to recovery and take control of their life story.

The Dance+Therapy Project.

The THRIVEGulu Trauma Recovery Center was established in Layibi Techo Division, Gulu City in 2013 on a large piece of land owned by THRIVEGulu. This facility provides a safe gathering space for survivors of all ages – women and men, boys and girls – to share their stories and needs, recover from mental health trauma, and reclaim their lives in post-conflict northern Uganda.

Our signature “two pillar” model: Mental Health & Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) and Individual & Community Empowerment. This model ensures that all our beneficiaries benefit from a holistic program of MHPSS services, including counseling, community sensitization and psychoeducation, in addition to empowerment services, such as Village Savings and Loan Associations, adult literacy, and GBV prevention and response.

Our Signature "Two Pillar" Model.

Through active listening, empathy, and an openness to all, THRIVEGulu provides Mental Health & Psychosocial Support to survivors of conflict:  both women and men, boys and girls, 1st– 2nd– 3rd generations.

Through motivation, commitment, and impartiality, THRIVEGulu offers Individual & Community Empowerment programs for entire communities/villages and refugee settlements, targeting regions where individuals are struggling to reclaim their dignity, especially women and girls’ survivors of violence.

The implementation research project is built on an existing Dance+Therapy pilot project for Northern Uganda funded by Comic Relief.

A Poem by Jacky.

Jacky is one of the beneficiaries receiving support from THRIVEGulu through the Dance+Therapy project. She was taken into captivity at the age of 5, and after escaping from the LRA rebels, she started Primary education in one of the schools in Gulu.

After Senior one, her parents could not afford her school fees so she dropped out and got married at the age of 17. Watch the video for more details about Jacky and her Poem.
