Saving Lives Through Counseling: Harriet’s Story

Trauma healing begins with engaging and educating individuals in the community who are suffering in silence. To reach those in need, THRIVEGulu mental health professional regularly hold information sessions and check in on the mental well-being of the Empowerment Groups. These sessions provide awareness of the causes, signs, and symptoms of mental health challenges and resources to get help.

Many of the individuals in the newly formed Empowerment Groups have no experience with mental health support or education which makes it especially important for THRIVE to provide outreach.

Recently, Harriet took a leap of faith and joined a new Empowerment Group to participate in the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA). Although the VSLA opportunity was making a positive financial impact in her life, she was still struggling emotionally. It wasn’t too long before two counselors came to her group to teach a session on mental health.

Harriet shares, “I felt broken when Christine was teaching the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges. I asked myself, ‘did she know me before?’ Everything that she was teaching was happening in my life.”

“For several reasons, I’ve had a difficult life. It is hard to forget the memories and to heal from the mental anguish caused many years ago,” Harriet said, “When I first started counseling, I was very weak. But now my hope and happiness has been restored thanks to THRIVEGulu. The counselors coming to our community are saving us.”
