Life changed when my daughter died: Mary’s story

Life used to be very good, but everything changed for me when my daughter passed away. I was so sad and I became very depressed. Life was very difficult and I struggled to feed my grandchildren. I wanted to commit suicide so I bought medicine to do so. Before I went through with my plan, I met a THRIVE counselor who was in our village. She counseled me and continued to support me. I am still alive because of the counseling sessions.

My greatest accomplishment is being alive. I still feel very sad and cry about the death of my daughter. She was a wonderful woman. She would check on me everyday. She was kind and caring. But I must think of my grandchildren. Now, I have joined an Empowerment Group and participate in the Village Savings and Loan Association. Because of this, I am able to feed my grandchildren so they don’t go hungry.

One thing I have learned from my life is that when you have a challenge, you should seek support. If I did not have this support from THRIVE, I would be dead. I pray to God to bless the hands that are supporting us and give me the courage to heal.
