Beatrice participates in our literacy sessions with her group, Lubanga Ngeyo – God Knows. She never got a chance to attend school. Before the literacy program began, her friends would help her write her name on documents. “I wish I could be young again so that I can go to school with my fellow students,” she says. “The ground is my book for the moment because I want to be neat and not make any mistakes when I start using the pen in my book.”
There are many people in our groups just like Beatrice- older “mamas” in the groups who never attended school and have spent their whole lives not knowing how to write their names. Today, because of the literacy program, they tell us they feel happy and confident when they see their writing in the dirt of the compound or on the pages of their books.
