Staff received a refresher course on trauma

Trauma is complex and affects every individual differently. What works for one person may not work for another – there is no blanket solution in healing from trauma. The field of trauma healing is rapidly changing as we learn more about the effects of extreme violence and abuse.

THRIVE is committed to providing the very best services to the communities that we serve. This means ensuring our team is up to date on the latest information and tools used in treatment. For three days staff across all programs received a refresher course in trauma healing. The course was delivered by VIVO, an outpatient clinic exclusively treating post-traumatic stress disorder in Pece, Gulu.

The intensive course covered everything from recognizing the symptoms of trauma and methods of response to the far-reaching impact of trauma. Interventions were practiced amongst the group so as to fine tune their skills. By the end of the training all staff left feeling confident in their ability to identify individuals in our programs that may need more specialized support.

The training also focused on suicide prevention. In recent years, suicide rates in Gulu, Uganda have been on the rise. Ugandans suffering from the war, coupled with crippling poverty, have left some feeling that there is no alternative. With this ever increasing reality it is important that our staff are prepared and able to handle every situation.

THRIVE works to provide a holistic approach to healing by providing a variety of venues for emotional support and attainment of new skills. Our aim is to assist Ugandans in moving forward. Our education programs provides skills and our women’s empowerment works to improve the financial stability of families.
