World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day is commemorated each year to support refugees around the world. Each day, hundreds of refugees continue to flee their homes in South Sudan into Northern Uganda. Host communities have welcomed their brothers and sisters by providing what they can even though they don’t have much to give. The support of international aid and implementing partners has been greatly appreciated by both the refugees and the communities doing their best to help. THRIVE was eager to participate in this important event in Lamwo and stand with millions around the world in solidarity.

The 2019 theme is: #StepWithRefugees — Take A Step on World Refugee Day. Thousands of people came to Lamwo to celebrate the day and coordinate efforts to improve conditions of the refugees. Members of the host communities expressed their concerns and needs since they are also in need of support because most of the region lives in extreme poverty. The local school children provided awareness through poem entitled, “Hear my cry.” Additionally, traditional Acholi song and dance called “Larakara” was performed along with cultural performance from South Sudanese refugees current living in Lamwo.

We’re grateful for the support of our partners Trocaire and Irish Aid who have recognized the importance of mental health support in vulnerable refugee communities. We can all step up and take a stand with our refugee brothers and sisters in Uganda and around the world!
