This war has starved my heart.

THRIVE is on the front line of the 3rd largest refugee crisis in the world today. Nearly 1 million refugees from South Sudan have crossed the southern border in search of safety. Recognizing that the arrival of so many people generates enormous stress on the host community, we provide support services both to the refugees and to the Ugandans who welcome them into their nation. In the refugee settlement where THRIVE operates, there are over 50,000 refugees, 86% of whom are women and children. At the same time, it addresses the enormous strain on land and resources that the local Ugandans experience as the refugees arrive en masse. Last year, Tony was among the first three clients to seek support from our counselors.

“Before the war broke out in South Sudan, there was only peace in my community. I never imagined that I would be living far away from my family. This war has starved my heart. I don’t know where my wife and children are today.

In 2010, intense fighting broke out after the dispute over the election. During the violence, my two brothers were killed. I managed to survive my injuries with bullets in my leg and shoulder, but I was forced to flee to Northern Uganda. I thought my stay would just be temporary, but I am still living here, unable to return to South Sudan.

My family is my only treasure and it is unbearable not knowing where my children are. The conflict has destroyed all I had. I used to question why I was still alive. I have been suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts, so I decided to seek help when I heard about the new support.

After many counseling sessions, I am free from these thoughts. Now, I know that when I am suffering, I can seek help through counseling. I even tell others to seek counseling. I cannot stop smiling today because of the gratitude I feel for the counselors. I am alive today because of them. Thank you to THRIVEGulu for coming to my rescue.”
