Atek ki Lwak was formed out of the suffering of women in this community. We wanted to make sure that women have sources of money, rather than being forced to wait for money from our husbands. We have joined THRIVEGulu’s literacy program, to learn how to read and write. We also have a trained peer counselor who we can talk to about our problems, and some of us are involved in THRIVEGulu’s group therapy program.
I have always been driven to make money to support myself and my family. Today I have joined hands with my husband and started to raise chickens for sale. Our savings helps to buy chicken feed and to support the business. My next dream is to start a piggery project. In time, I know I will achieve it!
THRIVEGulu empowers survivors of violence in post-conflict northern Uganda to reclaim their dignity and heal the invisible wounds of psychological trauma through integrated, holistic services which address mental health, financial self-reliance, and multigenerational literacy.
