It is with a heavy heart that I announce the sad passing of our friend, brother, and leader, James Ojera Latigo. When I first arrived in Gulu in 2009 and inquired about how to establish an NGO that would support those coming home from the war, James was there to offer advice. As an expert in peace and reconciliation, he was immersed in the challenging work of bringing young child soldiers and child mothers home and providing for their needs. With so much direct experience, his advice was invaluable, and he offered it generously, helping us to establish THRIVEGulu.
When we raised money for land, James contacted a group of brave women who had farmed a large plot during the war and negotiated the purchase for us. It was a sacred day when we met the women and transferred the deed so that we could build the center, establishing THRIVE’s roots in Gulu. When the center was completed, James was there to dedicate it, joining us in planting a tree, setting down literal roots.
When we formed a board of directors in Uganda, James was the first member. He joined the US board, and served as Board Chairman in Uganda, overseeing THRIVE’s many activities. Even when he was stretched thin with many responsibilities in the community, with his family and with his church, he still valiantly served THRIVE as it expanded its work.
Hearing news of the terrible car accident that took his life, we are all asking ourselves what THRIVEGulu will look like without him. Who can possibly lead us like James, our bold and tender mentor, has done? I pray that his inspiring example will empower us as we carry on our precious work uplifting the people of Gulu and beyond.
And to his wonderful wife, Barbara, and his children, we offer our deepest condolences. Please accept our genuine sympathy as you navigate the loss of your noble husband and father.
